Eureka Recycling drivers vote for strike authorization by the Teamsters

Teamsters Local 120 truck drivers from Eureka Recycling announced that they had voted Sunday to authorize strike action. Although the authorization does not authorize a strike, it opens the door to a possible work stoppage. This could be a powerful salvo in contract negotiations for St. Paul’s residential recycled materials nonprofit.

The non-profit recycling organization employs 32 drivers and sorts 400 to 450 tonnes of recyclable material each day at its Material Recovery Facility, Minneapolis. Eureka processes materials from St. Paul and Roseville as well as Lauderdale, Lauderdale, and Shoreview. Minneapolis has its own residential collection and is subject to a separate processing contract.

Monday’s Eureka officials stated that they had reached an agreement with the labor union over most contract items. However, there was still disagreement about whether retirement contributions would be paid to Eureka’s 403b plan or the multi-employer union pension fund.

“Eureka determined that Eureka’s MEP would place the union in serious financial danger and could be detrimental for Eureka Recycling union workers,” Lynn Hoffman, Eureka co-president, said in a written statement Monday. “We believe our current retirement plan offers a better alternative.”

Teamsters Local 120 posted a photo of 26 workers gathered in the union hall to its Twitter account Sunday afternoon with the caption “STRIKE WATCH!” A majority of Eureka Recycling members voted today in favor to authorize a strike. “We are UNITED in holding all companies accountable for providing the best retirement and job security possible for our members.”

Troy Gustafson was the business agent who gave the quote. He could not be reached for comment.

Officials at Eureka Recycling refused to interview Hoffman, but they did forward Hoffman’s written statement.

It reads, “We believe and support the right of our employees to organize and bargain collectively and have always maintained a relation of mutual trust and respect for Teamsters Local 120.” “We are deeply disappointed by Sunday’s vote to authorise a strike, as there are other routes to resolution.”

Hoffman stated that the agreement between the nonprofit and Local 120 was “grounded” in a labor agreement. Strikes and lockouts are prohibited under the current contract. She wrote that “we are required to arbitrate” if an agreement is not reached.

She stressed that there are no changes in the horizon for recycling services, and no strike date has been established. She said that Eureka met Monday morning with Teamster officials and that both sides were open to continuing negotiations this week.

Eureka collects all St. Paul’s residential waste, single-family homes and multi-family properties. The contract expires April 30. Last year, Eureka was the only company that responded to St. Paul’s request for proposals. The next contract negotiations are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

$2M federal funding granted to Rondo community land-bridge project in St. Paul

Under the federal infrastructure package, $2 million will be provided for the large-scale landbridge project in St. Paul’s Rondo.

ReConnect Rondo, a non-profit organization, applied for the grant under the “Reconnecting Community” section of the infrastructure bill. This $1 billion portion will be used to help neighborhoods affected by the federal highway construction. A jurisdiction could only request $2 million in money.

The project is estimated to cost $392 million. However, the funds will be used to fund environmental impact analysis, neighborhood traffic analysis, modeling, and outreach to the community to evaluate the potential effects of building a large cap above Interstate 94 in St. Paul.

Master plan

ReConnect Rondo announced the federal funding earlier in this week, as did U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum.

ReConnect Rondo Executive Director Keith Baker stated that “we can feel very, very happy that we were fully-funded for what we requested.” “All these studies will eventually inform our masterplan.”

ReConnect Rondo holds community engagement events to hear from the public about their concerns and to solicit ideas. The bridge will provide 12 to 21 acres of new land for housing and businesses. This will drive economic opportunity and revitalization in the area.

Baker stated, “What we are hearing is that this community sees it as a culture district or a cultural history and arts kind of environment.” “Open space in parks is another area we are hearing.”

Since 2002, ReConnect Rondo has worked with Ramsey County, St. Paul, the Metropolitan Council and the Minnesota Department of Transportation to raise funds for the predevelopment phase of this project. ReConnect Rondo received $6.2 million from Minnesota in 2021 for their master plan. The $2 million from the infrastructure bill was matched by $500,000 from St. Paul, as well as funding from the 2021 state Legislature.

“Precedent is already established”

Baker stated that he expected federal funding to cover 80 percent of the estimated $392 million cost and that the state would pick up $80 million.

Baker stated, “That’s exactly the same amount even though it was invested in Target Field’s infrastructure project.” “The precedent has already been set.”

Baker said McCollum, U.S. Sens. Tina Smith, Amy Klobuchar advocated for funding the project at the federal level. ReConnect Rondo plans on applying for any other grants that it qualifies for.

McCollum stated that ReConnect Rondo’s neighbourhood-led vision was important and would create opportunities for economic growth and community empowerment. It allows for reconciliation and healing in a community that has been cruelly torn apart. I am proud to have assisted with the transfer of these funds to Fourth District.

At Tuesday’s meeting, dozens of people will speak on safety in schools in St. Paul

A dozen speakers are expected Tuesday to speak at a listening session of the St. Paul school board on school safety.

After Devin Scott, 15, was stabbed to death at Harding High School in February 10, 2015, the board called a special meeting.

23 people registered as of Monday afternoon to speak at the meeting that starts Tuesday at 4:30 pm at Washington Technology Magnet.

Each speaker has a maximum of two minutes to make “recommendations” on school safety.

To sign up in advance, fill out a public comment form at spps.org/boe or contact the board secretary at sarah.dahlke@spps.org or 651-767-8149.

The meeting will be streamed live on the website of the district.

A special meeting was requested by the St. Paul Federation of Educators. The teachers union claimed that the board and the district leaders have not responded to their long-standing concerns about “the climate within our schools” in a petition of more than 700 signatures.

In a Pioneer Press article, five teachers from Harding High shared their concerns regarding safety at the school.

The 45-minute public comments session that began at the beginning of a school board meeting earlier in the month focused on school safety.

UPDATED: 5 people shot, 2 fatally, after celebration of life event in St. Paul

ST. PAUL — Two people died in an altercation in St. Paul following a Saturday celebration of life.

Frogtown’s gunfire occurred less than 24 hours after a shooting in St. Paul that left three teenagers injured. Police said that the shooting occurred after a funeral.

Melvin Carter, the Mayor of St. Paul, said Saturday’s and Friday’s shootings “shaken our senses of security.” It’s simply heartbreaking.”

Carter stated Saturday that he was tired of using the words ‘disgusted, senseless, and ‘frustrating’. We’re tired of trying to find words to describe violence. Each one of our neighbors and every member of our community deserves to live in peace.

Officers were summoned Saturday at 5:15 PM to investigate a report about a shooting victim.

“When officers arrived they found a chaotic scene. They discovered that there was not just one person who had been shot but five,” stated Sgt. Mike Ernster, a spokesperson for the police.

The incident occurred in the parking lot at Frogtown Square. This area is home to apartments, businesses and other buildings on Dale Street and University Avenue. Officers learned that some victims had been driven to the local hospitals by others.

A man was declared dead by paramedics on the spot, while another man was declared dead at United Hospital by someone who drove him there.

One of the other victims is a man in critical condition, while another is a woman in stable conditions. The third victim is a woman being treated for injuries not life-threatening.

Ernster stated that preliminary information indicates that the shooting occurred in the parking lot following a celebration in the community room. As was the case on Friday night, the person being honored had not been a victim to violence.

Ernster stated that shots were fired after an altercation took place as the event was about to end. “Investigators are speaking with witnesses to try to determine what happened and who is responsible.”

As of Saturday night, no one was in custody. Although police said that no motive was known for the shootings at the scene, the incident did not seem random.

These homicides were the fourth- and fifth in St. Paul last year. Eight people were killed in the city last year, including a 28-year old who was shot and killed outside a funeral home in St. Paul’s West Side. Four others were also wounded and shot. The funeral was held for a victim of homicide.

Mayor, governor speak out

Carter was joined Saturday night at a press conference by Brooke Blakey, Neighborhood Safety Director, and Police Chief Axel Henry.

Carter stated, “We have always said that public safety doesn’t only concern what happens after a gun goes off. That public safety cannot be limited to what happens after someone calls 911.” “It has to be about proactive, data-driven interventions that a local community makes to decrease the frequency we call 911.”

Carter said that “nobody’s better” than St. Paul’s paramedics, who provided medical assistance and rushed victims to the hospital. St. Paul officers and investigators also assisted in holding the perpetrators accountable. The St. Paul Office of Neighborhood Safety was responsible for comforting traumatized people and working with the police to prevent the retribution killings.

Carter stated that guns are everywhere and policymakers must adopt common sense gun violence prevention reforms. Until then, however, any celebration or community institution can be invaded in such a tragic way.

Gov. Tim Walz tweeted Saturday night that gun violence in St. Paul was unacceptable. I am committed to increasing public safety funding, getting illicit guns off the streets, as well as addressing gang activity in order to end the violence cycle.

Police are continuing to investigate Friday night shootings at the Wellstone Center. This Wellstone Center houses El Rio Vista Recreation Center and Neighborhood House on St. Paul’s West Side. Ernster stated that a person in the vehicle opened fire on the building, and three teenagers, aged 14, 16 and 17 were killed.

In the building was held a post-funeral reception to honor Devin Denelle Edward Scott. Scott, 15 years old, was fatally attacked at Harding High School in February 2010. A 16-year-old has been charged with murder.

Police took a 16 year old into custody after Friday’s shootings. Police found him with a gun, and they are investigating his role in the shootings.

February Forecast: State Of MN Has $17.5 Billion Surplus

ST. PAUL (MN) — Minnesota’s economic outlook and budget are stable with a projected $17.5 billion surplus over the next two-years, according to the Minnesota Management and Budget Office Monday.

Officials said that the surplus was largely leftover from the current biennium.

Despite inflation, revenue from corporate and individual income taxes is increasing. Officials stated that the state’s revenue will exceed its spending in the 2027 fiscal year.

Governor Tim Walz said, “This is great news Minnesota. It’s a sign that our economic strength and growth is continuing to grow.” Tim Walz in a statement.

“Minnesota has a record-low rate of unemployment, is one of the most diverse countries in the United States, and is poised to become the best place in the country for raising a family. Today’s forecast and our One Minnesota Budget outline the historic opportunities that we have to invest in education and children. We also cut taxes and lower costs and send checks to Minnesotans all over the state. I look forward to this continued growth and making sure every Minnesotan reaps the benefits of our thriving economy.

Gun control opponents recognize prevention bills may pass this session as St. Paul recovers from a deadly weekend

ST. PAUL (Minn.) – Anguish and fear have erupted following a violent weekend that saw five people injured and two killed in St. Paul.

Two separate celebrations of life were opened to the elements by someone who set fire to them. One was for Devon Scott (15-year-old boy who was stabbed to death at Harding High School).

Residents living near shooting locations are often anxious.

One resident said, “There are just too many young children running around with guns. I just don’t get it.”

Troy Kennedy, 37, of St. Paul and Larry Jiles Jr., 34, were both killed on Saturday. Jiles was also known as “Chef Hot Hands”.

After the second incident, Melvin Carter, a visibly shaken mayor, spoke. Three teens sustained non-life-threatening injuries in a drive by shooting at a Scott Wellstone Center service. The shooting took place less than 24 hours later. Carter issued a new call for gun restrictions.

Carter stated that “we continue to see some common sense gun violence prevention Reforms that the vast majority Minnesotans and vast majority Americans support.” “Any celebration, any community organization, any space, can be violated in this heartbreaking manner.”

Mayor Melvin Carter

Gov. Tim Walz tweeted, “The gun violence in St. Paul is unacceptable.”

Four major gun proposals are currently making their way through Congress. Two of the most important are a stronger background check and red flag law. Legislators are also facing a stricter requirement for gun storage and a bill that requires the reporting of stolen handguns.

Rob Doar, of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, says that none of these measures would have prevented the weekend’s tragedy. However, he believes this year could see the passing of one or more of these bills.

“I believe it’s probable that some of these bill will be passed. Doar stated that the Senate’s narrow margin will be a determining factor. “These particular measures have not received the same strong commitments from the Greater Minnesota senators as they have on other controversial items that have been moved forward.”

Doar is the face against Minnesota gun control measures. The caucus has a lot of power, so for him to claim that there’s a chance of one these bills passing after all the years of being introduced but going nowhere is quite an accomplishment.

What must happen in the DFL-controlled legislature to allow one of these to be passed? It would be necessary for the Senate and House to retain their very small DFL majority. With just one vote, the Senate majority could not have been narrower. Despite all odds, the DFL held St. Paul together for two months. This is why opponents such as Doar admit that this could be the year.

National cabinet to discuss Medicare, hospital funding; robo-debt inquiry continues

As regular readers of this blog will know, national cabinet is meeting at 9am in Canberra.

State and territory leaders are due to start arriving in the next little while and we’ll be sure to bring you any comments they make before the meeting.

In the meantime, the Grattan Institute’s Professor Stephen Duckett – a member of the government’s strengthening Medicare taskforce – was on Radio National to talk about what kind of reforms are needed.

Professor Stephen Duckett.Credit:Jeremy Piper

He said the $250 million in funding flagged by Labor during the federal election campaign isn’t enough to fix Australia’s healthcare system.

Host Patricia Karvelas wanted to know: How much, then, is actually needed?

Here was Duckett’s response:

Well, the College of GPs and the AMA say they want $2 billion tomorrow. Obviously, that’s not going to happen. But I think we are talking about a billion or more going into the primary healthcare system over time.

I think it will take a couple of years for the foundations to be established. So maybe going into the next election the government ought to be making a commitment to put a lot more money into the system.

How To Land A Great Mortgage Rate, Even In Today’s Market

A great mortgage rate can make all the difference in buying a house. It is important for hopeful homeowners to take the necessary steps to ensure that you get a great mortgage rate.

Mortgage rates are not arbitrary numbers that lenders choose. There are many factors that can impact the average interest rate attached to home mortgages.

  1. Employment patterns — High employment growth tends towards higher interest rates. However, low growth or weak employment numbers will lower rates.
  2. Stock market — Many people remember that the housing bubble burst during the 2008 stock market crash. The stock market’s state is usually reflected in interest rates.
  3. Federal Reserve — The Federal Reserve is responsible for predicting inflation and increasing interest rates when money is taken out of the American economy. Economic stimulation will cause interest rates to drop if money is added.
  4. Global impact — Interest rates will be more volatile due to geopolitical events such as gross domestic product improvement, terrorist actions and natural disasters.

Credit score, down payment amount, and location all have an impact on the mortgage interest rate.

How to Get a Great Mortgage Rate

These tips will help you get a great mortgage rate for your new house, even if the rates are rising.

1. Understand Your Credit Report — Credit reports are available through each of the three major credit reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) once a year through AnnualCreditReport.com. Check the following elements when you get your credit report.

  • Credit score — The median credit score of successful mortgage lenders is around 720. Know where your credit score is, and what you can do to improve it if it falls below the threshold.
  • Credit account information — Your credit report will often include information about your accounts, including the credit limit, loan amount, balances, and payment history.
  • Information — There may be both soft and harder inquiries. Soft inquiries are about checking your credit score. Hard inquiries are when a lender or credit card company reviews your credit reports after you apply for credit or a loan.
  • Improve Your Credit Score– A higher credit score can help you get a lower rate on your mortgage. It shows lenders that you are a responsible borrower who will pay your mortgage on schedule.

These are some effective ways to increase your credit score.

  • Make sure you pay your bills on time. To maintain your good standing as a borrower, set up automatic payments.
  • Reduce owed debt. Pay down any outstanding credit card debt as quickly as possible. Lenders want you to spend responsibly. Keep your credit card balances under 30 percent of your limit.
  • Do not open or close accounts. Although it may seem like a smart idea to close your credit card account, it reduces the credit available. Lenders may consider opening too many accounts within a short time period financially irresponsible.
  • A positive credit record is essential. If you haven’t held a credit card in a long time, it’s difficult to show your history of responsible spending and timely payments. Display your creditworthiness by having low revolving usage, on-time payments, modest accounts, and as much as possible.

3. Reduce Your Debt to Income Ratio — This is another factor that will help you secure the best mortgage rate possible for your home.

The DTI ratio is calculated when you add all of your monthly debt payments and divide that number by your income before taxes. There are two types: A front-end DTI is a calculation that is related to the house you want to purchase and the mortgage required to buy it. A back-end DTI shows you your current debt situation.

Most lenders suggest that in 2023 the front-end DTI ratio should hover around 28 percent. However, the back-end ratio can have a little more flexibility, with a maximum of 36 percent. In simple terms, you can decrease your debt-to income ratio by either decreasing your debts or increasing your income. Your DTI ratios will be positively affected if you reduce your debt or avoid taking on additional debt.

4. You can save up for a down payment. This will reduce your monthly mortgage payment. While 20 percent is the recommended down payment for a home purchase, other types of loans and lenders may require as little or as much as 3 percent, depending on your eligibility for federal programs.

You can lower your monthly payments by putting down more money upfront, even if it isn’t 20 percent of the purchase cost. There are several ways to save money on your down payment, including:

A strict budget is essential.

You can cancel unutilized memberships and subscription fees.

Reduce your consumption of fast food and dining out.

Avoid unnecessary technology and clothing purchases.

Temporarily reduce the amount you save for retirement.

These may seem like small steps but every dollar that you put towards your down payment will pay off in the long-term.

5. Talk to a Loan Officer — A loan officer will help you understand your options and determine the best rate. New American Funding’s loan representatives can help you find the right rate for you, whether you are looking for an FHA loan or conventional loan.

After speaking with a loan advisor, and getting a great interest rate, lock it with New American Funding’s 5-year Rate Protection Pledge. The pledge locks in your interest rate and allows you to refinance later to a lower rate (if applicable).

New American Funding can help you navigate the mortgage process

New American Funding helps homeowners connect with experts who can assist them at every stage of the process, from getting control of their finances to choosing between traditional and non-traditional mortgage options.

  • A Buydown Loan offers lower monthly payments in the first year. New American Funding offers a fixed-rate loan to eligible borrowers that can lower your first, second, and third year payments on a 30-year loan.
  • The Buyer Accepted cash buyer program helps customers compete against cash buyer offers. This program allows you to buy your home at a lower price and close quicker than traditional buyers. You have up to 90 days to list your home. The program also helps you stand out among the rest by offering a better offer.
  • RE Home Connect allows customers to connect with real estate agents who can assist them in the buying process. RE Home Connect allows you to connect with recommended agents that can help you analyze the market and maximize your buying power.

New American Funding’s loan advisers are able to help homebuyers navigate the process of getting their finances in order and selecting the right loan for them. The J. D. Why companies shouldn’t air their dirty social issue washing in public

“It’s great that the corporations are adopting this but let’s remember where the real credit goes,” Rhodes says. “The heroes are the citizens who make change from the ground up.”

Corporate support for climate change, the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements have been embraced, but some companies have been called out for hypocrisy.

Nike advertising featuring Colin Kaepernick.Credit:AP

RMIT University marketing lecturer Dr Amanda Spry says Nike’s slick “Dreams Crazy” advertising campaign featuring former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was contrasted with a lack of black people on the company board. Proctor and Gamble’s razor brand Gillette tackled toxic masculinity, but its campaign was described as virtue signalling because the company charged higher prices for women’s shavers than it did for men’s.

Rhodes points out that women who have accused men in significant positions of power of sexual abuse and violence are the ones who have courageously faced ferocious scrutiny and put their careers at risk. Likewise, the African American protestors have battled for decades, risking their lives on the streets, to campaign for their civil rights. Qantas may have supported same-sex marriage, but its executives didn’t have to face the risk of physical violence in a street march. “Corporations might amplify [a social issue] and cash in, but we have to remember that real political change comes from citizens,” Rhodes says.

Flare tower of Woodside’s Pluto LNG plant in WA with an Indigenous rock engraving of an echidna in the foreground.

Spry defines woke washing as inauthentic brand activism – when a company takes a stand on a social/political issue such as gender equality, racism or climate change, but fails to back it up with their actions and values.

“This is the new frontier of corporate social responsibility,” she says. “Brand activism is more controversial and polarising.

“It comes down to perceptions of authenticity. Are you walking the talk, are you practising what you preach?”

Woodside Energy presents itself as sensitive to Indigenous culture, but has faced criticism over its treatment of sites containing Aboriginal rock art. “That sits in stark contrast to them offering their employees the choice of whether to work on Australia day,” Spry says.

A Woodside spokeswoman says the company works closely with Aboriginal elders and Indigenous communities, showing respect for their culture and values. The company’s approach to the environment, she says, is based on science and complies with environmental laws and regulations.

“Peer-reviewed research has not identified any impacts on Murujuga rock art from industrial emissions associated with liquefied natural gas production,” the spokeswoman said.

Telstra says it engages on topics that matter to people and which are aligned to its purpose and values. “When we do say something, we also take action,” a company spokesman says. “Reconciliation is one example”.

PwC Australia’s head of people and culture Catherine Walsh also says her firm’s policy is in the spirit of reconciliation with First Nations peoples. “Better understanding of each other and our complex national identity and history is essential to creating the inclusive culture we aspire to at our firm,” she says.

Australian Retailers Association chief industry affairs officer Fleur Brown says Australian consumers expect companies to act in a more socially and environmentally responsible way. They were increasingly calling out and boycotting businesses that don’t walk the walk.

Loading

Spry lists outdoor clothing company Patagonia, recycled toilet paper producer Who Gives a Crap and the HoMie, not-for-profit street clothing enterprise which supports young people who are homeless, as examples of organisations that have backed up their claims with action. Dutch chocolate maker Tony’s Chocolonely, which campaigns against slave labour in the industry on its packaging, is another.

Clothing brands including boohoo have campaigned on gender equality while exploiting female textiles workers, Spry says. The company denies the accusation, saying it ensures that the workplace rights of the people who make its clothes are protected. “We talk to our customers about important issues such as gender equality and will continue to do so in future,” a company spokeswoman says.

Claire Braund, executive director of Women on Boards, says companies need to get their own house in order before they jump on the bandwagon. The Australian Shareholders’ Association judges the merits of a company’s stand on a social or political issue on a case-by-case basis. “What is appropriate for one company may not be for another,” chief executive officer Rachel Waterhouse says.

“Companies that take positions that are popular without them being closely aligned with [their] culture, values, and practices will inevitably be found out,” she says. ”Reputational damage would be worse than not taking a position in the first place.“

With trust declining in the ability of governments to solve economic and social problems, Waterhouse says pressure has grown on companies to take a more active part in addressing social issues including climate change, sexism, racism and modern slavery.

In his recently published book Woke Capitalism: How Corporate Morality Is Sabotaging Morality, Rhodes argues that woke washing is a mere symptom of a deeper problem that could potentially weaken democracy. He says a decrease in state intervention and the growing power of corporations since the 1980s has contributed to their influence on significant political issues. But while companies are interested in climate change, sexism, racism and identity politics, they have shown little or no interest in the housing crisis or massive wealth inequality in an age of billionaires.

“They are not going around saying they are trying to increase the minimum wage,” Rhodes says.

“We have CEOs whose payslips look more like ransom notes. If corporations ever had two main social responsibilities, one is to pay tax and to provide decent and meaningful employment to people. That isn’t happening.

“The kind of politics that gets highlighted are things that either support or don’t interfere with corporate interests. That’s not democracy, it’s closer to feudalism.”

The notion of being politically awake – woke – harks back to the 1960s when civil rights activist Martin Luther King spoke about being aware of social and political change. This notion of being woke went viral during the Black Lives Matter movement and has been misappropriated to disparage progressive political causes. Rhodes warns people need to be woke to woke washing.

As he describes it, the substantial debate is not between the left and the right. Democracy is where the real struggle lies. He fears for the very system that allows us to have political differences. “That is what is potentially at stake here,” he says. “That’s what worries me more than where a CEO makes fairly inane gestures about Australia Day.“

New owner takes reins of Port Sydney general store

David Schwartz is the friendly face behind David’s General Store in Port Sydney.

He took the business over in May 2022 and says he is truly amazed at the friendly vibes and welcoming people in the community.

“I didn’t even know where Port Sydney was,” said Schwartz. He said he checked out the area, particularly Mary Lake, and the general store when it was for sale, and liked the possibilities.

He’s added a pizza menu and said he uses top ingredients and is amazed at how good he’s getting at making those. “Who knew?” questioned Schwartz who said he retired from the fast-paced automotive parts industry and wanted to find something else to do, something he could put his name on and make his own.

“This store has a lot of history going as far back as 1911. Now we are the new owners. Since opening the store the town has embraced my store with tremendous support. I have added a lot of new product selections to complement the store and the needs of the town. Our Pizza is the talk of the county all made fresh here. Also we make baked goods like cookies, brownies, and now bagels. Our breakfast sandwiches are also turning heads especially when we put them on our bagels with local farmed eggs, real cheddar cheese and enough bacon to choke a pig lol,” wrote Schwartz in an email introducing himself. He’s also added smoked meat sandwiches.

Schwartz said he wants to focus on buying local ingredients. “We bring in a lot of local meats and local pierogies, we deal lots with locals… This is what my concept is: If I’m dealing with the locals, the locals will respect it and deal with me.”

Schwartz explained that he lives with his wife in Tiny Township. His wife works in Toronto and comes up on weekends and now they have a store in Port Sydney, which should make it interesting but he’s committed to making the business a success. “People need to see my face and feel my heart,” he said adding that he hopes to be the place where everybody knows your name.

David’s General Store is located at 653 Muskoka District Road 10 in beautiful Port Sydney.
